Which Road to Travel

I’m going to school to, hopefully someday, get a job developing custom software. When I first started school (part-time a long time ago) I had this idea that I was going to do something with blogs. But who can compete with Movable Type or WordPress? So, I gave that up. Then I decided I was going to be making Twitter apps. But that market is saturated. I’ve decided that by the time I graduate and become an actual developer there will probably be nothing left to develop. I’m going to continue with my education, of course, but I’ve given up the dream of becoming a software developer. I don’t think I’ve got it in me to come up with something overly fantastic.

I think, maybe, I’m going to focus on websites for smaller companies and, perhaps, some entertainment type companies. Or maybe I’ll just use what I learn and write some kinds of tutorials. Really, I don’t know where to go from here. This semester I’m learning about stuff I need only for my degree, but not which I’m interested in. I wonder if it’s going to do me any good. Will this course finally make me an expert?

I’ll be done with school before too long (I hope and barring some unforeseen disaster) and the reason I actually started in this program just doesn’t work for me anymore. So now I’ve got to reevaluate where I’m going. I was, at one point, thinking of starting my own business, but at this point I’m thinking I’ll just do work for someone else. I’ve seen some interesting internships available through my school but I haven’t gotten to the point in my schooling where I can qualify. And now I’m just sort of floundering. It’s slightly depressing. You’d think I’d be able to find some ideas online, but there’s just too much junk to sift through and it’s just way more depressing. Have you tried googling ideas for internet/mulitmedia jobs?

I guess someone could hire me to be their own personal tweeter. That would be interesting. A waste of a perfectly good Technology degree, but interesting none-the-less. Shoot, if it gave me gainful employment in a related-field and I enjoyed myself even a little bit (and paid back my student loans) I’d be ok with that. That’s funny to me because I’m not really that into Twitter, so if I was hired to tweet for someone else I’m pretty sure I’d get easily confused. Or lost in the noise. Do I even care about all that?

I guess I’ve got some time to figure it out. But right now I’m just wondering where I’m headed. Maybe a big company will hire me and I’ll just develop behind-the-scenes and hope my stuff gets popular. Not what I was hoping for, but hey, I’ve got to what I’ve got to do. Right?
