Move a Little

The ladies at my work are participating in a weight loss challenge– similar to “The Biggest Loser”. Where I work is a fast paced, get-off-your-butt kind of place, so it shouldn’t be too hard to lose at least a little weight (I’ve lost some since I’ve started there). So, I was a little surprised when I heard some of them talking about weight loss pills. Now, I have no problem with weight loss pills, as I’ve considered them for my little “plateau” I’m experiencing in my own attempt to get thinner healthier. But I was astounded that they were considering this as they were sitting around and letting some work go undone.

Here’s the thing: if they would spend less time sitting chatting and more time doing what they’re supposed to be doing they would inevitably lose some weight. Considering the contest they’re in is based on percentage of weight lost and they aren’t exactly large women (by any standards except probably the modeling industry) then they’re percentages would probably win the day and the money. Instead, they spend an unbelievable amount of time sitting around gossiping and letting other people pick up their slack. There is the problem for me, as one of the slack picker-uppers.

I’m 20 pounds away from my own weight loss goal– which was initially 55 pounds (I have no idea how that converts to the metric system, by the way). So, I’ve lost 35 pounds. Most of that weight loss started when I got off my ass and started moving. I always changed my dietary habits, but this post isn’t about that. I’ve only been considering pills to help me get over that last little hump. I’m pretty sure if I lose that last few pounds I’ll be able to maintain it. I’ve maintained the 35 pound loss for a little while now (and didn’t join the weight loss challenge at work), so I’m confident in that. But I also move more now. I’m out and about and don’t slack at work while watching other people do my work.

I’m happy to have the job though. Don’t get me wrong. I’m thrilled that in this economy my job is at least secure– for the foreseeable future. That’s ok by me. I’m not complaining about my job. This is a complaint about people who don’t do their job and then wonder why they’re gaining weight at work (where the work is more physical). DUH! Stop sitting there watching the rest of run around like chickens with our heads cut off and maybe you’ll have a chance to win that challenge.
