Katherine gets the Kids

Katherine Jackson is getting custody of the Michael’s three kids. Debbie Rowe, the mother of his first two children, says she justs wants "meaningful visitation" and is happy with the arrangements. My thought is "this is news?" Honestly, I’m not the slightest bit surprised that his mother got custody. She’s also getting a hefty bit of money from his estate and controlling the money in the trust for the kids. Whoop-di-do. What would have been a welcome bit of news would have been Debbie demanding to get her children back after she sold them off to Michael. That would have been interesting. An 80 year-old woman getting custody of small children? I see more nannies in their future.

I actually get irritated when I see so much about the children of celebrities. And the fact that the world was agog when the Jackson kids were finally unveiled just made me shudder. I have no sudden fondness for MJ (I had none prior to his death and won’t pretend to worship him now) but his kids still deserve to be left alone. Forever. Until or unless they decide to jump into the public spotlight themselves. When they’re adults and can make those decisions themselves. I will say that if any of them decide to write a book based on their lives as the children of Michael Jackson I will snatch it up in a heartbeat. No lie. I’m incredibly curious about what their lives were like in his household. And I’m equally curious as to what kind of individuals that life created.

I say that because I’m watching my children emerge as their own person and some (if not most) of the decisions I’ve made for them as their mother have certainly influenced their personalities. And I’ve got no doubts that some of what Michael Jackson learned and experienced as a child influenced the way he turned out as an eccentric and very odd adult. Was it all the money? The way he was raised? What made him decide to alter his appearance so drastic? Nurture had to play a huge role in that (especially considering the entire Jackson clan ultimately got some kind of cosmetic surgery to keep the “look” in-family). My eldest child has my attitude about a lot of things and has picked up some of my most distasteful personality traits (I’m not proud of that, but it’s true). She’s also picked up some of my personality that I’m more proud of, so it’s not all bad. At any rate, considering all of this, my curiosity about the ultimate outcome of MJ’s children’s lives is, sadly, making me watch this story in all it’s gore and over-hypeness (not a word, but whatever).

I wish the entire Jackson clan well, of course. But moreso the children of Michael. They need all the good wishes and prayers they can get, I think.
