Happy Mother’s Day
Today is Mother’s Day and it’s time to lavish mom with awesome gifts such as fake house plants, long lines for dinner out and maybe some Ferrari parts (of course, those kinds of gifts are given in the hopes that they will be regifted back. How funny are some of the gifts that mothers get on this special day? My own husband seems to forget that the gifts given today are supposed to be something that I want and not something he wants to get some use out of.
For a couple of years now I’ve gotten lawn care equipment and a couple of pans (not sets, mind you). Which were all nice and dandy except he does the lawn care and I have a full set of pots and pans. He stops by the hardware store and finds what he thinks will get him some points. Ah, the joy. This year, though, he got me a gift card to a major department store. Which is something I can really appreciate this time. Though I’d prefer he take his time and find me something that I really like (he should know by now) I will certainly take the gift card over the hubcaps or roto-tiller. Almost 7 years of marriage and he still can’t figure out what gift makes me get excited. Of course, Father’s Day is something completely different for him. He gives me a long list of things to get for him—usually complementing the something he bought for me on Mother’s Day. I think I’ll get myself a new pair of shoes with the gift card and maybe buy him a new purse on Father’s Day. How funny would that switcheroo be?
My kids don’t think much about the day, of course. They’re too young and aren’t interested in making me feel special. They figure they did that when they were born.
No one is planning on taking me out to dinner, which is good because who really wants to stand in line for 3 hours waiting for a table in a restaurant where the staff is just worn out? I’d like for my oldest daughter to maybe cook up something so I don’t have to worry about that, but I’m pretty sure she’d burn it and then what’s the point? Nope. I think the best gift either girl could possibly give me is their time today. Just spend some time and save the money and effort. Honestly, I don’t need burnt pork chops anyway.
