From the Fish
There are certain restaurants in town that help you lose weight better than diet pills for weight loss. You hear about food-borne illness and you think that’s a bad case of salmonella or something that’s going to land you in the emergency room with an I.V. in your arm and a tube down your neck. But that’s not always the case. Ever had the 24-hour Flu? Likely a food-borne illness. Ever have that food “run right through” you? Likely a food-borne illness. Little things can trigger a bad response in your body, but it’s the ugly bacteria that usually do it.
There are a couple of restaurants in my town where I will not eat. When I’ve eaten there before I’ve had bad experiences later in the evening. However, my husband is not one to be deterred by “small” gastrointestinal issues. He will happy munch down on that cheaper than dirt hamburger and come home later to suffer while I happily watch rerun of “House Hunters”. He’s insane that way. At any rate, he’s a member of a social club here and every Saturday he wants to get one of their burgers. Well, this joint isn’t exactly the cleanest pit in town and though I’ve never been in the kitchen I’ve got no doubt it’s even worse than out front.
So, he gets this sandwich and buys one for me. I was at work when he bought it and when I got home I was starving. I didn’t know where the fish came from, so I happily ate it. The fries were soggy, so I only had a couple of them, but I inhaled the fish. We watched some t.v. and then off to bed. At 4:30am I wake up. The fish had been contaminated with something that my body didn’t like. I was livid. I don’t like being awakened in the middle of the night anyway but I especially don’t like it when my bowels are throwing a revolution. I finally found out where my husband got that sandwich. Sure enough—a place at which I normally refuse to eat. Ugh. The only thing that really saved him from my wrath was the fact that he too was experiencing the intestinal revolution.
If a restaurant doesn’t take care of their front end—meaning there is grime buildup, cobwebs, some kind of strange stench and dirty windows—then their kitchen is probably disgusting. Moreso because no one can see whether it’s clean and if they don’t care what people think of the front why should they care if there’s old food lying on the counter tops contaminating the new stuff? Also, pay attention to the employees when they go to the restroom. If they’re not washing their hands then you probably don’t want them touching your food, right?
There are a couple of restaurants in town that I can share stories about, because I’ve been behind-the-scenes there. But I’ll leave that for later. Right now I’m going to go remind my husband that, yes, I want to lose weight but, no, I don’t want to do it this way.
