Demolition

Our neighbor’s house caught on fire recently. It wasn’t a complete loss, just the top portion of the house. Yes, that’s technically a lot but the downstairs didn’t get much damage and the people living there all got out in time. So, this house was a rental and the guy that owns it was already working on renovations when they had the fire. Apparently, his home insurance didn’t cover that sort of damage (whatever the real reason for the fire is, I guess) and he couldn’t finish the renovations he started.

For a while the house just stood there, empty and the windows were boarded up. Mags, my youngest, was creeped out every time we drove past the house. She decided the house was haunted and would go on and on about it. Then the other day… gone. It was nothing but a pile of rubble.

Apparently the guy who owned it decided to just demolish the building and start over. Or sell the lot. We haven’t found out yet exactly. So, poor Mags, ever concerned, freaked out. She thought the wind blew it over, no matter how many times we explained to her that it was done on purpose, and was upset because “what are they going to do with their furniture?” And it’s a whole new set of worries.

I’m pretty happy that they tore it down, though. It was an ugly house and they’d been “working” on it for a while—without improvement. And they couldn’t keep a tenant to save their lives. I think the guy just rented to anyone who showed up to look at it. I’m kind of hoping that they don’t rebuild and the people next door buy it for a yard. Would save the town the ugly of what most of our rental properties look like anymore (we seem to grow slum lords in my town).

I just wish my poor, timid child would get over the issue of that house being gone. She makes up some outlandish tales about it and I’m pretty sure she dreams about it. It’s her “scariest house on the block” and I can’t get that out of her head no matter how hard I try. Poor kid. If the town ever enforces the ordinance that landlords must keep up their properties or lose them, then she’s going to be in for a terrible shock. She’ll be seeing piles of rubble all over the place. She’ll probably try to get us to move then. As for that house, I’m glad it’s gone and I hope it doesn’t come back.
