But, Really, It wasn’t Me

Where I work we use a POS system (Point-of-sale) to put in orders from customers. Nothing is written out by hand (unless we need it to remember later when we’re putting it in the POS) and the computer keeps track of everything for us. Most places use this type of system now, so it’s really no big deal.

Except when someone decides that we’ve conned them. They then will blame the computer and demand– DEMAND — to see a written order instead of relying on the computer. As if we can’t change a piece of paper just as easily as we could data entered into a computer. Really, people need to think sometimes.

Recently I had a lady argue about a product she received. She wasn’t happy for whatever reason (some people just never are) and demanded to see how the order was placed. I pulled up the order on the POS and pointed it out to her. It was placed exactly as she wanted. Then she declared that I’d changed it when she started complaining. I told her that I didn’t even go into the computer until she said something and didn’t know that she was unhappy until then. Not to mention the fact that there is no way I can go back in and change anything after it’s been entered because I don’t have the proper authorization (and I don’t think original orders can be changed, just appended, but that’s a little more complicated for some people). She demanded to see where I’d actually written her requests down. Well, I didn’t have that paper, as I didn’t need it and why would I keep it anyway? *sigh*

She ended up getting a partial refund, of course, because she was so irate. I didn’t have anything to do with that decision, which was fine, but I wouldn’t have given her anything back. She was very rude from the get-go and her attitude didn’t improve when I showed her that it was a production error, not a POS entry error. Being the target of all things wrong really annoys me. There are multiple levels here that our company utilizes and I’m just level one.

I’m thinking of asking for a raise based on the fact that I obviously do everything for the company– big ol’ multitasker that I am. I wonder if it’ll work.
