A New Era
It’s at times like this that I wish I was down in the Outer Banks, enjoying a life by the sea. Not because it’s so cold here (it is) but because it’s a good place to find a quiet place for reflection. I can’t find that here in Ye Ole Ohio. Good grief.
I watched the inauguration of President Obama yesterday and was moved to tears. I was so proud to have been a part of that moment in history. I was proud that the world was focused on our country because of something good and, dare I say, hopeful (here is a roundup of some of the international headlines heralding our new president). I was thrilled to see so many people on the National Mall, taking part in that moment and being actively involved in our political process. How long have Americans sat outside of Washington and been apathetic to the goings-on inside? Not anymore. President Obama stirred the soul of a nation. It was a great moment to watch.
Also, I was glad for live tv and streaming online commentary. I guess it would have been nice to be among the millions who saw the inauguration in person, but it was really nice to watch it from the warmth and comfort of my own home.
At any rate, I hope that he lives up to half the expectations that we have of him. If he’s nearly as good as we hope he is then he will bring great things to our country. Or we will be sorely disappointed and retreat back into our apathy never to re-emerge. I’m hoping for the meeting of expectations and very little disappointment.
