Yoga: Gentle Practice
I recently received “Yoga: Gentle Practice with Zyrka Landwijit” a yoga dvd from Real Body Work. I practice yoga to help ease some of the stress in my life and to help manage my chronic pain. What you didn’t know yoga is good for that? Well, if you know how to do the poses properly and know your own limitations, it’s an unbelievably beneficial “exercise” program.
This particular yoga dvd is perfect for beginner or seasoned practitioners who just can’t manage a more strenuous workout. For beginners, there is a pose guide that shows you step-by-step every pose that you’ll be doing in the regular routines. As Zyrka walks you through the poses, she explains what physical and/or emotional benefit each pose provides. For instance, some seated poses, such as the child’s pose, help relieve stress and high blood pressure, as well as stimulate digestion and blood flow. She also gives you contraindications for each pose; such as a knee injury or late-term pregnancy. When she warns of the contraindications, she gives advice on alternate ways to do the poses. That’s important because so many people buy these dvds and jump right in, which can result in significant injury if poses aren’t done correctly.
Because this is generally for beginners, it’s a light enough pace that people who suffer from certain chronic diseases can benefit from these exercises without causing undo strain. I’ve been using this particular dvd for a couple of days and haven’t experienced an increase of episodes. Often when I strain myself, I’ll be laid up for days afterward. I think this is the perfect dvd for those who want to do yoga, but are afraid of going overboard. There are enough spoons in your day [pdf] to be able to do even a little of this. Just practicing the poses in the pose guide can bring a significant amount of relief.
I highly recommend using this as part of your pain relief regimen. I’ve purchased quite a few other yoga dvds in the past and this is by far the best one for the days when I just don’t feel like it. I usually give up and throw them on the shelf never to use them again. A couple of episodes into them and that’s it. But this one is easy enough that I don’t have to strain. And when I just don’t feel like it I can do some of the easier poses to just stretch and breathe. I don’t think it will take the place of your doctor/patient relationship (and/or pharmacist/patient relationship) but it should bring a definite measure of relief. Just practicing yoga at all has helped me.
Good luck.
