School Implements GPS for Long Trips
Parents are feeling a lot more comfortable letting their middle school age children go on long school trips. Dayton (Tennessee) City Schools is utilizing a more advanced technology to let parents keep track of their 8th grade students as they travel to Washington D.C.
“I picked up a prepaid phone that has the Global Positioning System in it,” Marcus said. “On the trip, the GPS will update our position every 10 minutes. People will be able to go to our website and see where we are and even zoom in on a satellite picture of the group.”
The GPS is a navigational system that uses a network of 24 medium orbit satellites to transmit precise microwave signals to a receiver on Earth. The longitude and latitude of the receiver can then be determined and mapped.
As the mother of a 16 year-old I think this would be perfect. Not only can parents keep an eye on their kid going to and from the mall, they’ll be able to track them from Tennessee to, well, wherever. I don’t know about the cell phone thing though.
I think that if school’s are going to continue to send their students on such long trips then they should also invest in one or two GPS units for their buses. The units aren’t as expensive as they used to be and if something terrible happens along the way, the bus can be easily located. There are a lot of school trips to Washington and other points of national interest and considering the political climate right now, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
