Saints DE Charged
New Orleans Saints defensive end Charles Grant has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for the Feb. 3,2008 shooting death of a pregnant woman.
Grant, who was stabbed in the neck during the fracas, was charged by an Early County grand jury that also charged Laquient Macklin with felony murder and feticide in the shooting death of Korynda Reed, 23. Reed died after being taken to the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, after the fight early Feb. 3.
[...]Sheriff’s Capt. Will Caudill said at the time of the melee that there was no known connection between Grant and Reed. He said the fight started inside the club and then moved outside, and Grant was attacked after shots were fired.
Woodrow Gray was indicted on a charge of aggravated assault in the knife attack on Grant, a former University of Georgia star from nearby Colquitt.
Feticide is the crime of killing an unborn fetus that may have been viable.
The NFL has said that they will fine teams whose players are suspended for disciplinary reasons.
“We want to continue to emphasize personal conduct and personal responsibility,” he said at the end of a one-day league meeting. “One way to do it is to hold teams responsible for the conduct of their players.”
Goodell instituted a tougher policy during the 2006 season, his first as commissioner, after a series of arrests, nine alone affecting the Cincinnati Bengals.
It’s about time the NFL starts holding players and their teams responsible for their reprehensible behavior. For far too long players have believed themselves above the law and the NFL has stood behind them no matter what they did. Not so anymore. The public is getting fed up with the way these “role models” are behaving and want to see an end to it. Perhaps if the teams put their players on a shorter leash they will start acting more like adults and less like spoiled rich kids who can do no wrong.
