Portable Hard Drive
Buy.com has a weekly sale and I’ve been highlighting deals that are going on my wishlist. This week they have a Western Digital 160GB My Passport Essential USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive. This goes perfectly with the laptop and cables-on-the-go that I’ve been looking at.
The WD Passport can hook up to either a laptop or PC/Mac and is small enough to carry in your purse or brief case. It’s the perfect gift for a techie on the run or a freelancer who needs to keep his or her (ahem) files close at all times. You don’t have to worry about installing a bunch of software to get this beauty going either. Just plug it right in and you’re good to go. The power supply comes from whichever machine it’s connected to- through the USB bus - so there’s no need to worry about batteries or finding an electrical outlet. Well, except for what’s needed by your machine.
Besides being perfectly sized, it has a capacity of 160GB. That’s tons of files, pictures and/or videos. 160GB is 160000MB and many CD-RWs hold just 700MB. I normally use Sony CD-RWs and can fit about 800 pictures on them. So, the Western Digital Passport holds about, oh, 182,400 pictures (if you’re using it just for that). Just keep in mind that this math is determined by me based on capacities that I’m familiar with and neither Western Digital nor Buy.com is promising this is going to hold true for your needs. Still, at just $78.99 that’s a steal! Especially for professionals that take their work with them. And don’t forget, Buy.com offers free budget shipping on all of their weekly deals items.
I’m looking forward to building up my freelancing supplies and going on a “working” vacation. My goal with my schooling and my jobs is to be able to work for myself and, to do that, I need to be prepared. This will certainly get me on my way.
