Older College Students
There’s a lot of talk lately about 18 month degree programs and getting a quick education to be able to market yourself better. I see the commercials all the time while watching my soaps. Sites like http://www.gibbseducation.com/ seem to be multiplying like crazy.
But would this be the best choice for your own education?
I think if you’re older, like me, and looking to get a degree this would be perfect. It would take someone my age 6 years to receive an Associate’s degree. Why? Because older people (over 30) are working and have families. How many of us can take the time to go back to school full time? I’d wager not a whole lot. Even stay-at-home parents have to take into account their child rearing responsibilities (and household chores). This means taking at the most three classes a semester. And struggling through them. That means, depending on the degree, 6 long years of study. I’d be 40 before I could graduate.
18 month programs make everything nice and compact then get you out the door and into a better job. Well, if your first job was waiting tables (which mine was). Then you can actually make decent money and if you want go to another school to get your “big school” degree. Or not.
Considering the fact that all my favorite soaps (Guiding Light…ahem) are switching gears, firing entire writing teams (”Days of Our Lives“), and generally having a rough time of it, someone could possibly even get into the entertainment industry with just this kind of degree. If you have any really good ideas, these soaps can most certainly use them. Get your degree, stick your foot in the door, and you could find yourself saving a struggling storyline. That could lead to a head writer/producer position and before you know it you’re getting your own star in Hollywood.
Do they give soap producers stars? I don’t know, but if they don’t you can always take a cue from Meg Ryan and bust out of soaps, into movies.
I’ll be keeping my eyes open.
