My Super Sweet 16

Watching “My Super Sweet 16” with a teenager is not a good idea. Mine was giving me a hard time because on her Sweet 16 we sent really nice birthday invitations, didn’t rent a limo, and didn’t have to mortgage the house. She watches that show and really puts the guilt trip on.

But, really, what good does it do a child to allow them to spend $100k on a jewelry set that she’s only going to wear one time? Or another $100k on special door prizes for the kids coming to the party? That’s just crazy- even if you are a millionaire. Of course, the culture in which we live demands that we give our children what we didn’t have and – by allowing them to watch this show – feel guilty because we can’t go all out. I don’t think my teenager will forgive me for not having a 5-tier cake at a resort for her 16th birthday.

MTV hit the jackpot with this one. And so did any company that sells these extravagants and/or their knock-offs. Thanks for the guilt, MTV.
