Looking Forward
There’s a lot to be said about going on vacation. For instance, it’s really expensive. Especially if you go away to somewhere fun- like the coast or Europe (unless you live there- which I don’t). A couple of years ago we looked into fractional ownership- which is basically time shares - so that we could go on vacation. With fractional ownership you purchase a place along with a few other people. Usually the deal involved is that you get a certain number of weeks per year while the other owners get their weeks. 3-5 weeks a year in a vacation home can almost pay for itself after a while. As long as you go on vacation every single year. Imagine paying $2,000 a week for 3 weeks. That adds up.
Well, we don’t have enough money to invest in that. At least not on the coast where I’d like to have one. We were able to buy into a camping resort thing at a lake a half hour away from our home. We’ve used that as our vacation destination. And, well, it’s not ideal (for me) but it works out pretty well for the family.
Now that my education opportunities are looking up (I’ve just been accepted into the honors program at my university) I was thinking about this again. When I do graduate- with honors - my resume will look pretty good. Then I’ll be able to get a decent paying job. Along with my husband’s job we might just be able to swing a partial payment for a beach front home. That would just rock. Of course, this is all dependent on the state of the economy in a couple of years. I’m hoping everything starts to level off soon.
We’re lucky that we can have these kinds of attainable dreams. A lot of people are struggling just to pay the rent and can’t imagine having partial ownership in a vacation home. I’m really thankful that we can at least plan for this kind of thing. That this is an actual possibility in our lives. That we don’t have to keep our fingers crossed in the hope that we finally hit the lottery. I’m thankful.
