It’s true
I was shopping for some baby clothes online (the new man is coming soon!) and came across something Barak Obama said (which, I might add, is causing a stir). He mentioned that the Midwestern middle class is “bitter”.
At issue are comments Obama made privately at a fundraising gathering in San Francisco last Sunday. He explained his troubles winning over working class voters, saying they have become frustrated with economic conditions:
“It’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
He was called “elitist” and “out of touch”. But is he wrong? I don’t think so.
I know that Ohio has lost hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs to overseas countries. And many of the people that worked those jobs blame NAFTA and immigration laws. They are angry and bitter! They’ve lost their livelihoods and there’s nothing come to give it back to them. Food pantries can’t keep up, welfare enrollment is up, and people are pissed. Why not? They have every right to be.
These candidates come through our states and say whatever they think we want to hear and then it’s back to business as usual in Washington. People are still hurting financially, losing their jobs, their homes and struggling to eat. Are Hillary and John McCain aware of this? Apparently Obama sees the huge rift. So what’s the problem?
He chose the wrong words to express his opinion. He made it seem like the things that people are embracing are bad. They are embracing parts of their life which they think they can control- especially considering they can’t control their employment anymore. Instead of criticising Obama for the way he worded something, they should be discussing the truth of what he says.
