Gordon Ramsay Saves The World

GRamseyRamsay’s Kitchen Nightmares is one of my new favorite shows (not the American version, which I tried watching but couldn’t get into). I had no idea who Gordon Ramsay was until I started watching that. And I still didn’t know how successful he was until just the other day. He’s got his own restaurants all over the world! Well, except for Las Vegas. I think he should yank some students out of http://www.vegasculinary.com/ and open one out there. Imagine how successful it would be! Then he could do a show complete with dancers and acrobats.

Ok, that would be going too far.

I haven’t watched both versions of the show enough to be able to criticize one over the other. The American version seemed over-dramatic and cut short. It was some dude who owned a pizza shop and which was going under and he didn’t like Ramsay’s attitude. Bah! There were words thrown about and eventually all seemed well (especially when the restaurant owner got a free redesign for his place). But it lacked a lot of the British version’s character.

In the UK version (I watch it on BBC America) there is an update at the end of the show. Gordon goes back to the restaurant 6 weeks later to see how everything is progressing- and to see if they’ve kept the changes he implemented. The only time I saw a bad ending was when the lady with the French vegetarian restaurant just decided to call it quits. Ramsay about pulled his hair out trying to help her and they even got her a good chef (from Scotland). In the end, she just closed up shop and her father put the restaurant up for sale. Usually, though, there is some progress and restaurants eventually begin to see some profits. Take Momma Cherri’s Soul Food Shack for example. Charita Jones has shot to almost celebrity status in the UK since her restaurant appeared on Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. That episode was fun to watch- Charita has the personality to make it work and did!

The American version should quit with the unnecessary dramatics, allow Ramsay to show his softer side (though, he may not have it when dealing with Americans) and put some character into the show. Really just make it exactly like the original and let the tape roll. And maybe venture into towns that aren’t New York and Los Angeles. Find more people like Charita Jones and highlight their efforts to be successful. That would be stupendous.
