Google goes TV
I’ve been busy trying to earn a degree (I know, I’m late) so I haven’t been able to see any news about big, bad Google online lately. Ok, I’ve been avoiding it, because I don’t think Google is the big EVUL, still I haven’t seen any. Yet today I see that the search engine giant has struck a deal with NBC to go into television advertising. I wonder if this deal could put a lot of MMOers into Manolo Blahnik designer clothing? How wonderful would it be if the a lowly blogger could buy some time on a Google tv ad?
According to the article:
As it seeks to expand its reach into television, Google will face increasing competition. This year, the nation’s largest cable providers, including Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox, teamed up to develop their own system to place targeted ads on television. The effort is called Canoe Ventures.
Analysts said that while the partnership with NBC Universal represents a victory for Google, to effectively direct its ads the company needs to gain access to data from television set-top boxes. That data is collected and controlled by cable and satellite television providers.
“The only way that Google is going to take any share on TV is if they can take advantage of data to provide targeted advertising that is not available today,” said Ross Sandler, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets. “You need to work with an intermediary like a cable or satellite provider to target the data.”
I can’t imagine that Google needs to advertise itself. The brand is so recognized that it’s joined Aspirin and Band-Aid in the English lexicon. Even in my ripe old age (in Internet terms) I’ve been heard to growl “Google is your friend” in real life. Considering their search engine and many of their aps are free, I wish Google luck in their new endeavor.
