Fantasia Stole the Show
The buzz around Wednesday’s episode of “American Idol” wasn’t about who got the boot (Syesha) or who is in the top two (David Archuleta and David Cook). Nope. The fans are way more interested in an over-the-top performance by past Idol winner, Fantasia.
Fantasia, the passionate, raspy-voiced single mother from North Carolina, to this day is arguably the edgiest “Idol” winner ever (Taylor Hicks and his premature head of gray hair don’t count). Tonight, however, she truly outdid herself, bursting onto the stage with a head of fire engine red hair and three backup dancers and delivering a high-energy performance of her song “Bore Me.”
The performance immediately sparked a lively debate on the Web over whether Fantasia was back to her magnetic self or had completely lost her mind.
“I loved it…it was FUN and CRAAAAZZZY! I was up dancing!” wrote one fan on the “Idol” forums, while another said: “What was all the screaming about? That’s talent? She’s lost it.”
I personally see a little bit of the more flamboyant R&B influences -such as Patti LaBelle and Aretha Franklin- so I don’t see why her appearance and energy would be upsetting. I didn’t care for the song though. Not at all. If it were something different I may have watched the entire performance, but I just couldn’t sit through the song music and lyrics. That’s what sucked. I really hope her entire album isn’t filled with that stuff. I don’t care for it. I think she needs to stay true to her roots and she could really take off. As long as she forgets that crap she was singing on Idol.
Here’s the video so you can see for yourself.
