Dozing to Dr. G
I was lying in bed last night trying really hard to fall asleep. Of course, I had my t.v. on because if I couldn’t go to sleep I was going to watch something. But I had the volume turned down so I could barely hear what was on (”Dr. G: Medical Examiner”). Pretty soon I started drifting off– I was in that little slice of heaven right before dreamland. Anyway, I’m lying there about to go night-night when a commercial for mesothelioma blasts through the room. Now, I don’t mind these commercials usually. I prefer them to anything with Billy Maze, actually. But this one was way too loud and shocked me right out of my dozing-off. Great.
So, I didn’t get back to sleep for a while and continued to watch “Dr. G”. I don’t know why I like that show so much. I learn so many ways that I can just drop dead on a dime. Last night some guy had a blood clot attached to the wall of his aorta and didn’t know about it. So every so often this blood clot would shoot little blood clots out to his various organs and cause some damage. The other story was about a guy who got into an argument with his wife and she stabbed him in the arm (I’m pretty sure it was with a butter knife, actually). The guy was an alcoholic, so his liver wasn’t functioning correctly and he bled to death. Yikes. Here’s Dr. G being very compassionate and very clinical all at the same time (I like her better than that old dude that used to be on HBO). And I’m just completely fascinated by the whole process. She gets out the brains and innard and cuts them apart. Then she weighs them and examines them. When she’s done the camera pans out and focuses on a trash can. Above that is a sign that reads “No Trash. Organs Only.”
Isn’t that just the type of thing you like to fall asleep to?

It’s really weird - when I am sleeping alone I have no problem falling to sleep with the TV on. But when my wife and I are in bed together, I have a harder time falling asleep with the TV on. It may be because we have to watch HER shows, I’m not sure, but it is noticeably different which is weird.
It seems I can only fall asleep to the TV in the living room - during a show I want to watch. If I put it on in the bedroom, for some reason I listen intently to every thing being said, sound effects, any noises. Gotta turn it off.
