Crib Safety
Last night I was watching “Dr. G: Medical Examiner” on DiscoveryHealth Channel and she was doing a case on a baby that died. It was incredibly sad. At first they thought maybe the little girl died because her crib was full of stuffed animals and blankets- but it turned out she had a congenital heart defect. Still, that reminded me about how important it is to make sure cribs have as little in them as possible.
I know that stylish and ultra cute crib bedding is important to any nursery. But the bedding should consist of mainly the sheet and possibly a bumper pad (though I think that’s being discourage too now). Other stuff, like the comforter, can be laid across the railing for an aesthetic appearance, but really shouldn’t be in the crib with the baby for safety reasons. Babies sometimes don’t have the strength to move their heads when their breathing is becoming obstructed. The best way to avoid that is to make sure the bedding in with them is kept light and minimal. Stuff animals and pillows should never be in the crib with a small baby. Besides the danger of suffocation, there’s also the chance that the child will develop an allergy to the dust the cute little critters seem to collect.
My grandson has a cute crib set. It’s bright with animals of all sorts. Very cheerful and very masculine at the same time. But he’s never slept with a thick blanket. I insist that my daughter (who is still living at home) put him in something warm as to not endanger him. We had a long talk about the dangers of overcrowding his sleep area and I’m pretty sure I made an impact. I’m glad too. I would hate for anything to happen to him- especially if it can be easily prevented.
Crib bedding is something that parents seem to spend a lot of time choosing, and that’s the way it should be, and a lot of thought goes into the design of the nursery. I just hope that more parents realize that the bedding should be safe as well as cute and that some of the best wall decorations are really crib comforters- which shouldn’t be put in the bed with baby.
