Controlling Birth Control
There are a number of conservatives who are coming out against birth control, even claiming that it’s abortion (maintaining that preventing implantation is murderous). In that vein they wish to have birth control redefined as an abortifacient. But birth control is used for many other things by women: treatment of acne, period control, hormonal control. With this redefinition, state laws that mandate insurance companies cover the cost of the pill could be nullified. Women would be in danger of coming across a pharmacist who is protected under a Conscience Clause and doesn’t want to fill her prescription.
That fact that this is even being discussed in the upper echelons of our government is alarming. It’s one thing for some fringe groups and churches to declare birth control evil, it’s quite another when government officials do it. This is put the health and welfare of millions of women in jeopardy. All because of someone’s deeply held religious belief that women shouldn’t be able to control whether or not she gets pregnant.
There’s a lot of talk about Obama being Muslim and trying to institute Sharia law (a bowlful of crap if I’ve ever heard it) but this threat is real and happening now. It’s not Muslim’s instituting it though- it’s Christians. They’re instituting their own form of religious law and it’s frightening.
