Clinton Puts Foot in Mouth

There’s been a little hullabaloo regarding the Democratic Presidential candidates. Seems that Hillary Clinton, when responding to a question about why people want her to quit the race, invoked the assassination of Bobby Kennedy as a reason.

“My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?” she continued. “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”

She claims that she was using that time as an example of how long the primaries went until a nominee was selected. Many liberal blogs have debunked that, however, stating that in 1968 the primaries were held later in the year than they were this year and that there were probably more appropriate examples. Some are saying that Clinton is actually saying that Obama stands a good chance of getting killed and that’s why she should wait it out. Maybe Obama should get a good life insurance quote if he’s going to continue to run.

Also, the Clinton camp says that she misspoke because she was tired and she was thinking of Ted Kennedy. Was this the case in March when she said the same thing to Time?

IME:
Can you envision a point at which — if the race stays this close — and with the difficulties that everyone has analyzed in accumulating enough delegates to get any distance ahead where party elders would step in and say “Senators Clinton and Obama, this is now hurting the party and whoever will be the nominee in the fall. We need to figure this out.”

CLINTON:
No I really can’t. I think people have short memories. Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn’t wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June, also in California. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual. We will see how it unfolds as we go forward over the next three to four months.

Sounds like a talking point that came back to bite her in the ass.
