Bed Bugs
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Ohioans have a huge problem with bed bugs.
Infestation grows
The apple seed-sized blood-suckers were almost exterminated in this country in the 1950s thanks to the chemical DDT, vacuum cleaners and better hygiene.
Why the bugs have re-emerged in recent years is a mystery, but it might be because of the popularity of travel to other countries, where the vermin were never eliminated, said Susan Jones, an entomologist with the Ohio State Extension Service.
Americans returning from other countries or foreigners coming here might unknowingly bring the little hitchhikers into this country in their luggage, purses or backpacks.
I remember when I was young my grandparents would say: “Good night. Sleep tight. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.” I had no idea what bed bugs were, but the phrase was kind of catchy. My great-grandmother told stories of children waking up with bites all over their bodies from the little blood suckers. I was glad I didn’t have to worry about them. Guess that’s going to change.
Does that mean my fantasy trip to the Outer Banks is out? Hmm, no. I’ll risk it.

We have done a lot of bed bug jobs here in Kansas City. It is important to mix a growth regulator with your adulticide insectide. This will sterilize the adults and prevent future hatchings. Also, we find that during inspections, bed bugs sometimes hide under tacked-down carpet next to the bed where the infestation is.
I didn’t know bedbugs were such an issue in the States. I’ve never had any problems. I know that bed bugs aren’t uncommon in developing countries such as Nepal, but wouldn’t expect to hear much news about it from back home!
