A Good Case for a Contract
I just read a thread on the WAHM.com message boards. A writer did work for a marketer. Apparently she wrote quite a few 350 word articles for not very much money. The buyer then put the articles on Ezarticles.com, but was unsatisfied with the page hits these articles received. He was very angry with the author and she seems to think that he wants a refund.
I saw something like this before. It was on a freelancer website, but involved a coder and a client. The client was happy with the coder, the code and everything that was happening- until the very end. Then the client didn’t want to pay. After he already had access to (and time to copy) the code. Eventually it was determined that this particular client had done this previously. Seems that the client just didn’t want to pay since he had the code in his possession. Why should he? Well, he lost and was forced to pay this time. But he’d already scammed other people out of their time and money, so he made out anyway. Could this be something similar?
Not long ago I was researching weight loss pills and ran across a thread in a marketing forum that actually advocated this type of behavior. Someone decided it was a good idea to tell Blackhatters that it was super easy to get someone to do your work for you and not have to pay them. There was some kind of loophole in the way PayPal does things and that a lot of freelancer sites will side with the client. There were a number of “Way to go! I’m trying this!” replies from unscrupulous individuals wanting to get higher SERPS and thinking this was the way to do it. Until these freelancer sites see a pattern developing with these people, there are going to be a lot of writers/artists/coders getting the shaft- simply for some adsense cash.
I highly recommend everyone who does any kind of freelancing to get the final payment up front- after you develop a good contract. Don’t be afraid to piss some people off, because ultimately it’s you that is going to do the work and lose the money if you’re not vigilant.
