5 year-old voted out of Kindergarten class

Remember Tiffany from Port St. Lucie, FL? She was a high school teacher that was fired because she worked bikini-clad for a charter boat service. The Port St. Lucie school board decided her conduct (too many absences) was unbecoming and gave her the boot. Now we have another case involving this particular school district. And this teacher didn’t get fired.

Alex Barton is a 5 year-old with a high-functioning form of autism. But that didn’t matter to his teacher. She put Alex in front of the class, asked his classmates to tell him what they didn’t like about him, and then allowed them to vote him out of class. When the votes were all tallied, Wendy Portillo sent Alex to the nurse’s office, where he spent the rest of the day.

Barton said after the vote, Alex’s teacher asked him how he felt.

“He said, ‘I feel sad,’” she said.

Alex left the classroom and spent the rest of the day in the nurse’s office, she said.

Barton said when she came to pick up her son at the school on Wednesday, he was leaving the nurse’s office.

“He was shaken up,” she said. Barton said the nurse told her to talk with the child’s teacher, who told her what happened.

Alex hasn’t been back to school since then, and Barton said he won’t be returning. He starts screaming when she brings him with her to drop off his sibling at school.

Thursday night, his mother heard him saying “I’m not special.”

Barton said Alex is reliving the incident.

They said he was “disgusting” and “annoying,” Barton said.

The state didn’t see any child abuse in this case, so elected not to file charges. The school board investigated and filed a complaint, and yet Portillo still has a job.

A high school teacher can pose in a bikini on some patio furniture and receive a harsh penalty (with which I completely agree), yet a kindergarten teacher can subject her students to taunting and shunning and retain her job? Now Alex is terrified to go to school and has had some emotional setbacks. For what? And what is going on in Port St. Lucie that they’re having these kinds of problems with their school personnel?

That is really stupid! I get so mad when I see school boards making such terrible decisions.

Peter Answers’s last blog post..Another Great Prank - Strange Reports

Hi, Peter,

I think the community of Port St. Lucie needs to rethink their choices of school board members now, especially because they saw nothing wrong with tormenting that poor child. That teacher should be fired immediately. Alex will probably have to undergo a lot of therapy to overcome the issues this mess has caused him. That whole school district should be ashamed of themselves.
