Rockin’ with the Rhapsody
I was sitting here listening to my Rhapsody and surfing through Associated Content, when Girl from Destiny’s Child came on. I listen to Rhapsody’s channels and have a custom one set up (it’s called "Toni Braxton" because she’s the bomb-diggity).
At first I didn’t realize who it was, but the song really got my attention so I looked. Then a thought hit me. Beyoncé doesn’t sing with them anymore. Is Destiny’s Child still together? Apparently not since 2005 when they decided to go their separate ways. What the hell is up with that? All of that doesn’t matter, really. Because what really struck me was how much better Beyoncé sounds with the other ladies. I’m not a big fan of modern pop music, but what I do hear from her on the radio (in the husband’s car when I’m allowed past the 70’s) doesn’t impress me. It just sounds, um, so, mainstream? I dunno. But it certainly isn’t the same woman that sang with Destiny’s Child. Or maybe it’s just because Kelly and Michelle boosted her up a little?
I’m a huge fan of Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, etc. I don’t really care for commercialized R&B or soul. I think something gets lost in translation and, quite honestly, Beyoncé doesn’t sound as good as she used to. Maybe she, alone, never sounded as good- maybe it was the other two that did it and Papa Knowles just made his little girl go to the top. Either way, something’s wrong when she’s all over the media and the two ladies that held her on their shoulders aren’t nearly as popular.
Perhaps I need to pay more attention to my Rhapsody channel. I haven’t looked to see if the other two ladies have anything popular that’s not in the mainstream. I’m going to keep an eye out, though. Because Girl seriously rocked and it’d be a shame if the other two voices that helped make that song aren’t being heard anymore.
Update:
Apparently my memory sucks (Shocker!). Destiny’s Child used to have 4 members in the 90s, but they kept falling off. I remember there was a lot of controversy about Mr. Knowles managing them and favoring Beyoncé. Heh, I’d forgotten all about that. Guess that’s when I developed my little bias. Bad, Lizzie.
