OpenSocial Hacked
On Digg’s frontpage today are two completely related and yet completely different articles. One says that Google’s new OpenSocial is taking off and overtaking Facebook. There’s even a nice chart to show the increases of, well, I’m not really sure about what as I don’t care too much about charts.
The other is TechCrunch. Apparently OpenSocial was hacked within 45 minutes.
A developer who goes by the alias “theharmonyguy” and describes himself as “just an amateur” claims to have compromised the RockYou OpenSocial application on Plaxo called emote (see the Plaxo blog for details on the application). Specifically, he claims to have added a number of emoticons to Plaxo VP Marketing John McCrea’s profile within 45 minutes of it launching.
The best part about it all is that Arrington has screenshots of Mr.Harmonyguy getting into Arrington’s account and defacing it (with Arrington’s permission, of course). This happened after John McCrea denied getting hacked. Oops. Screenshots suck, don’t they, John?
Anyway, the harmonyguy was asked to do the hacking so that RockYou could see if there were any exploits. There were and I’m sure they’ll be fixed. No harm no foul. But it makes for some really interesting reading. That hack rocked.
