GL Trying to Be More “Real”
Ha! This is funny. Guiding Light is trying to reformat to attract younger, more hip audiences. I think.
Ellen Wheeler, Executive Producer of the show, said this:
“I want to efficiently and economically deliver Springfield to my audience,” Wheeler says. “A real Springfield, where people have houses that have yards and people get in their cars and they drive to jobs.”
She promised the show will continue with its current cast of characters and storylines, though the format will allow for more in-depth character development.
“If I see someone planting flowers, I want to know what kind of flowers they are, if [someone] is driving a car, I want to know what kind,” she says.
“It will allow for a deeper understanding of who these people are.”
HUH?
I like the idea that Guiding Light is going to be shot using a new format and I really like that they’re going to be using new sets. Honestly, can Cedar be more disappointing? And why would the whole town hold a vigil for Marina in a hospital corridor? That’s just ridiculous. But do I really want to know what kinds of cars the characters drive? No, not really. I don’t even want to have scenes of them talking in their cars. People do have conversations in their cars, yes, but it just dilutes the story line on a soap. And who on the show has time to plant flowers? I have never once seen a character with dirty finger nails! Shoot, when they’re struggling to stay alive in that one itty-bitty hospital bed (why is it so far away from the wall? Anyone?) the characters always look their best. Better than any real person would look if they were lying in a coma, no doubt. C’mon, now! That’s just a really lame way of saying “We’re going to be doing a lot more product placement.”
I do want to see new sets on the show though. Practically the whole town lives in the Beacon Hotel. Is Olivia making any money there? And they congregate on Main Street and Cedars on a regular basis. The sets alone are enough to drive the average viewer to a new soap. I’d like to see them film outdoors more. I’m all about roaming digital handheld cameras, too- as long as it makes the story better. Any plans for that Ellen Wheeler? Or are you going to try to sugar coat the same crap we’ve been getting by shooting it outside?
